4. What computers will the Premium 3-D work in?
The Premium 3-D was designed around the IBM AT specification. It
will work in a 486/50 if the bus (I/O CLK) speed is lowered down to 8
Mhz. Please note that the bus speed is not the same as the CPU speed.
The minimum requirements would be a 386 or higher processor.

5. How much disk space is required to load all of the files
onto the hard drive?
About 5-6 megs for the Premium 3-D.

6. Can I have two sound cards in my computer?
No. Other than specialized software that would be developed by an end
user, there are currently no applications that will utilize more than one
sound card at a time. Please note that the only exception to this rule is if
you are installing a wavetable upgrade card that was designed to enhance
your current sound card.

7. Are the Premium 3-D and PAS 16 cards compatible with
one another?
The Premium 3-D card uses the Jazz chipset. The PAS 16 uses the 101
chipset. The two chipsets are not compatible. The two cards do share
the Thunderboard chipset which is what makes both cards Sound Blaster original
compatible. The Premium 3-D card is also Sound Blaster Pro compatible card.

8. Can I use my old PAS 16 Pocket Tools with my new
Premium 3-D ?

The Media Vision Pocket CD interface will work with the 3-D card.

The Media Vision Pocket Mixer will work with the 3-D card.
Please be aware that not all 3-D mixer functions are supported
when using the Pocket Mixer with the 3-D card. The Pocket Mixer
does not have the ability to turn ON or OFF the SRS feature on the
3-D card. For general volume control, the Pocket Mixer will work fine
with the 3-D card.

The Media Vision Pocket Recorder will NOT work with the 3-D card.

9. Is there a software developer's kit available for the
Premium 3-D?
Yes there is. Please contact the Media Vision Developers' Support Department
to purchase the SDK. You can reach the Developers Support Department at
1.800.862.4788.

10. Can I use the same DMA and IRQ values for both the
Premium 3-D and Sound Blaster emulation portions of the
card?
You use the same IRQ for the Premium 3-D and
Sound Blaster emulation portions of the board. The DMA values
can be different if you like.

11. How many IRQs and DMAs will the Premium 3-D occupy
on my system?
The Premium 3-D uses 1 IRQ and 2 DMAs. The MPU-401 emulation also
requires a port address and IRQ if enabled. All values are assigned via
software switches on the PROS.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file.
Please see questions 34 - 37 for more information on PROS.SYS.

12. What type of microphone will work with the Premium 3-D?
The Premium 3-D accepts dynamic microphones with impedance
ratings of 600 to 20K Ohms.

13. What are the emulation modes that are supported with the
Premium 3-D?
Both Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro emulation modes are
supported.

14. How is Sound Blaster Pro emulation attained?
The Premium 3-D uses the Media Vision JAZZ Digital to Analog
Converter (DAC) chipset to emulate the Sound Blaster Pro
sound card.

15. How is Sound Blaster emulation attained?
The Premium 3-D uses the Media Vision Thunderboard DAC
chipset to emulate the Sound Blaster original sound card.

16. What does the Premium 3-D use for its FM chip?
The Premium 3-D uses the Yamaha OPL-3 FM chipset. The 3-D card is
also wavetable upgradeable. The card can be upgraded with the Korg
Professional Wavetable Upgrade card. The Korg card is a WaveBlaster
compatible card.
17. Is the Premium 3-D supported under OS/2?
The Premium 3-D is not supported under OS/2.

18. Is the Premium 3-D supported under UNIX?
Media Vision does not support the Premium 3-D under UNIX. More information is

19. What causes a Memory Parity error?
This is typically caused by a DMA conflict. You will find the DMA
parameter on the PROS.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file. The
DMA is set with the Hx parameter. Many times increasing the
DMABUFFERSIZE in the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file will
resolve this problem. Here is a sample line.

DMABUFFERSIZE=128

20. How do I edit my files?
You can use Notepad in Windows to edit your files. You can also use the
EDIT command under DOS. You can also use the SYSEDIT program in
Windows. To use the SYSEDIT program in Windows:

1.) Ensure that you are at your Program Manger.
2.) Click on FILE under Program Manager.
3.)  Click on RUN
4.) Enter the following on the command line:
SYSEDIT  [enter]
5.) Edit the file. When you are ready to save the file, click on FILE and
then SAVE.
6.) Click on FILE and then EXIT to exit the editor.

To use the EDIT program under DOS:

1.) Enter the following at the DOS prompt:
CD\  [enter]
2.) Enter the following at the prompt:
EDIT  CONFIG.SYS  [enter]
3.) Edit the file. When you are ready to save the file, hold down [ALT] +
[F]. Then, press [X] to exit. You will be prompted to save the file. When
prompted to save the file, press [Y].

22. What are all of the drivers that should appear in the
Control Panel after the software has been loaded for the
Premium 3-D?

These drivers should appear in Windows Control Panel.

Media Vision 401 Midi Driver
Media Vision FM Synth Driver
Media Vision Mixer Driver
Media Vision Wave Driver
MIDI Mapper
Timer
[MCI]CD Audio
[MCI]MIDI Sequencer
[MCI]Sound

23. Can I load the Premium 3-D device drivers high?
Yes. The Premium 3-D device drivers can be loaded into upper memory.
Here is a sample line which loads PROS.SYS into upper memory.

DEVICEHIGH=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS  A220 I7 D1 H7 M320 Q2

Here is sample line that loads MSCDEX.EXE into upper memory.

LH  C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE  /D:somename /M:10

24. Do you offer an upgrade policy?
Media Vision does not currently have an upgrade program.

25. Which jumpers on the sound card should I change?
The only jumper that you might need to move on the card is
the J14 jumper. The SCSI I/O setting is set with J14.
The default is pins 5 + 6 covered which sets the I/O at 230.
You can change the I/O to 330 by removing the shunt from pins
5 + 6. Save the shunt by hanging the shunt off of either pin 5 or 6.
You can disable the SCSI interface altogether by installing a shunt on
pins 1 + 2.

Jumper J13 controls the DMA sharing option. Norminally this jumper is on pins
1 + 2. For some motherboards, DMA sharing is not supported, and sound will
not work. Move this jumper to pins 2 + 3 in this case.
26. When installing the software for the card, the program
locks up my system. How can I get around this?
The installation diskettes come with a MANUAL.BAT file. Insert Disk #1 and run MANUAL.BAT from
DOS. When disk 1 is done, do the same with disk 2. Reboot the PC. You can change settings by running
the MVCONFIG.BAT utility.

27. When I boot my system or go into Windows, I get read
errors from my floppy drive. What is happening?
Check your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for references to
your floppy drives. Unless you typically boot from your floppy drive, none
of your lines should try to load drivers or TSRs from a floppy drive.
Check the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. It is likely that
you will find some reference to your floppy drive on this line.

28. Why am I getting an "Incorrect DOS Version" error
message?
This error message is coming from the MSCDEX.EXE line in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. MSCDEX.EXE is a TSR that is used in
conjunction with a  CD-ROM drive.

If you do not have a CD-ROM drive, you can eliminate this line from
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

MSCDEX stands for Microsoft CD Extensions. MSCDEX is a DOS
version sensitive program. If you do have a CD-ROM drive, then here are
the steps that you would take to resolve the problem.

1.) Use the MSCDEX.EXE from the DOS directory. Here is a sample
line.

C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE  /D:MVCD001  /M:10

Here is a table to assist in determining the proper version of MSCDEX
for your system:

DOS version             MSCDEX.EXE version
=====================================
5.00                    2.21
6.00                    2.22
6.20                    2.23

2.) Assign the drive letter to the CD-ROM drive (on the MSCDEX line in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT) with the /L:$ parameter. Here is a sample line.

C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MVCD001 /M:10 /V /L:$

where $ is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive. In our example, the CD-
ROM drive is going to be drive D. Here is another sample line:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MVCD001 /M:10 /V /L:D

3.) Make sure you have a LASTDRIVE statement in your CONFIG.SYS
file:

LASTDRIVE=$

where $ is at least one drive letter BEYOND the last physical drive on the
system. Again, in our example the CD-ROM drive letter is D.
So, the sample line is:

LASTDRIVE=E

29. How do I correct a "not enough driver letters" error
message?
You will want to make the following changes to correct this error.

1.) Assign the drive letter to the CD-ROM drive (on the MSCDEX line in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT) with the /L:$ parameter. Here is a sample line.

C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MVCD001 /M:10 /V /L:D

where $ is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive. In the example above,
the CD-ROM drive is going to be drive D.

2.) Make sure you have a LASTDRIVE statement in your CONFIG.SYS
file:

LASTDRIVE=$

where $ is at least one drive letter BEYOND the last physical drive on the
system. Again, in our example the CD-ROM drive letter is D. Here is
the sample line:

LASTDRIVE=E

30. I've installed the card and software, but I do not get any
sound under DOS or Windows. What is happening?
Here are some suggestions that should help you sort out what is happening
on your system. The first thing you want to do is to make sure that the
sound card is functioning under DOS.

Here is a sample configuration for your CONFIG.SYS file.

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS  A220 I10 D1 H7 Q2 M320 V

Here is a sample configuration for your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

SET BLASTER=A220 I10 D1 H7 T4

It is imperative that you have a SET BLASTER line in your AUTOEXEC
file.

Reboot the system. Make sure that your speakers or headphones are
plugged into the OUT jack on the back of the sound card. Change
directories to the Media Vision directory (MEDVSN\DIAG). Test the sound by
entering the following line: Please note that you may use something other
than the PCM0811M.WAV file to test your sound.

TPLAY  PCM0811M.WAV             [enter]

You should hear the .WAV file play. If you hear no sound, reverse the
thumbwheel on the back of the card. Try TPLAY again. You might even
try plugging a different set of speakers or headphones into the OUT jack
on the sound card.

If this does not work, try a different DMA / IRQ combination. Once there
is sound in DOS, Windows should also have sound. If you still have no
sound in Windows, then check to make sure that the DMA and IRQ
settings match the D and I parameters on the PROS.SYS line.

You should also try the card in a different slot. Make sure that the BUS
speed on your system is set to 8.33 Mhz.

31. After I installed your card, my modem stopped working. Is
this what is called an IRQ conflict?
Yes, this is an IRQ conflict. It is likely that you are using IRQ 3 for your
sound card as well as your modem. You will need to
stop using IRQ 3 for the sound card. Here are
some steps to assist you in finding a suitable IRQ.

Please make the following changes to your system files.

CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS A220 I7 D1 H7 M320 Q2 V

AUTOEXEC.BAT

SET  BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 T4

Test the DMA and IRQ settings by using PLAYFILE under DOS.

Use TPLAY.EXE under DOS to make sure that we are using a solid IRQ
channel. Make sure that your speakers or headphones are plugged into the
OUT jack on the back of the sound card. Change directories to the Media
Vision directory (MEDVSN\DIAG). Test the sound by entering the following
line: Please note that you may use something other than the TEST.WAV
file to test your sound.

C:\MEDVSN\DIAG>TPLAY  PCM0811M.WAV      [enter]

You should hear the .WAV file play once.

If this does not sound normal, adjust the IRQ setting on the
PROS.SYS line in your CONFIG.SYS file. Please remember
that you MUST also change the SET BLASTER line in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you make modifications to the PROS.SYS
 line in the CONFIG.SYS file. Once you have sound under DOS, the
Windows sound should follow. Make sure that you
are using the same DMA and IRQ settings under DOS and Windows.
The DMA and IRQ settings for Windows can be found in the
[MVIWAVE.DRV] section near the bottom of the SYSTEM.INI file.

32. My mouse disappeared after installing the Premium 3-D.
What happened?

1. Ensure you have a mouse driver that is loading in
the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

2. If a bus mouse is used, check for IRQ conflict with MPU- 401
at IRQ 2. Many bus mice default to IRQ2, try moving the
MPU- 401 to IRQ 5.

3. Move the SCSI host adapter port address on the Premium 3-D.
The SCSI host adapter defaults to a port address of 230. Change
the address from the 230 to 330. This will require you to make a
software change as well as a hardware change. To change the
software, you will need to modify the MINI406A.SYS line in the
CONFIG.SYS file. Here is a sample line:

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\MINI406A.SYS I/O=330

You will also need to set jumper J14 to 330h. All you need
to do is to remove the shunt that is on pins 5 + 6.

4. If you do not have a mouse in Windows, please check
for an IRQ conflict with MVI401.DRV. This driver defaults
to IRQ 2.

33. None of my games work with sound. What am I doing
wrong?
The lack of sound is probably related to insufficient conventional memory
for the program to use.

Consult your DOS manual regarding memory management. The Media
Vision drivers can load into upper memory without any problems. It is
recommended that your conventional memory be at least 590 kb. This
should be adequate to run most applications.

If enough memory cannot be made available, you may need to create a
boot disk with a minimal number of drivers.

Finally, please refer to your instruction manual that came with the game.
You may also find it helpful to contact the game manufacturer.

34. What is PROS.SYS?
PROS.SYS is the driver that configures the Premium 3-D.
The Premium 3-D Windows drivers do not depend on PROS.SYS.

35. What is the latest version of PROS.SYS?
As of this writing, the latest version of PROS.SYS is 3.47. This version of the
driver shipped with the MV2200 kit.

36. What are all of the switches for PROS.SYS?
Default line:

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS A220 I7 D1 H7 M320 Q2

A#      Base address for the sound card. 210, 220, 230, 240, 250, 260.

37. How do I change the DMA and IRQ settings on the
Premium 3-D?
The DMA and IRQ settings for the sound card are software controllable.
You will need to modify the D#, H# and I# parameters on the
PROS.SYS line in your CONFIG.SYS file. Please see question # 35,
"What are all of the switches for PROS.SYS?" for even more information
regarding the D#, H#. and I# parameters. Here is a sample
PROS.SYS line. In this example, the 8-bit DMA will be 3,
the 16-bit DMA will be 5, and the IRQ will be 7.

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS A220 I7 D3 H5 M320 Q2 V

38. What does the SET BLASTER statement do?
The SET BLASTER statement sets environment variables for the Sound
Blaster emulation on your card. Many multimedia applications need
the SET BLASTER statement to function properly. Here is a sample line:

SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P320 Q2 T4

Parameters      Explanation
A### Port Address. Default is set to 220.
I# IRQ number. Default is set to 5

39. What does VBEAI.COM do?

This driver provides a standard software interface for sound
cards. This is known as the VESA BIOS Extensions / Audio
Interface. To use this driver. the application in question must
have support specific to VESA sound.

Here are all of the options available:

/H              provides on-screen help

/?              provides on-screen help

/B:dd           board number

/A:xx,xx        board address

/D:xx,xx        DMA channels

/I:dd,dd                IRQ channels

/P:dd,dd                defines user preference settings

/U unloads VESA driver from memory

/V verifies if the hardware is present

40. Can I have more than one SCSI host adapter in my system?
Yes. You can have as many SCSI host adapters in the same system as there are
available slots. The SCSI host adapter on the card should notinterfere with any
other SCSI host adapters that may be on your system.Add the switch /LUN=0 (if
you wish the sound card SCSI host adapter to be the primary adapter) or /LUN=1 to
the end of the MINI406A.SYS device driver line in your CONFIG.SYS if you
encounter any problems.
41. Can I connect a SCSI device to the Premium 3-D?
Yes you can. You will need a set of drivers to operate your SCSI device.
Obtain a third party device drivers that will allow you to operate SCSI devices
other than CD-ROM drives with the 3-D cards. One such driver is available via
FTP from Leiden University in Holland.
(ftp.wi.leidenuniv.nl:/pub/audio/mv3d/scsi/ncrdrv.zip)  However, Media Vision
is unable make recommendations regarding any third party products.

42. Will CorelSCSI! ver. 2 work with the Premium 3D?
Yes it will. Please be aware that all support for this configuration
must come from Corel.

43. Can I connect any CD-ROM drive to the CD-ROM controller
on my card?
You can connect a SCSI CD-ROM drive to the SCSI host adapter
on the sound card. You cannot connect a proprietary CD-ROM
drive to the SCSI controller on the sound card.

If you have a proprietary CD-ROM drive and controller, you can
connect the CD-audio output to the Premium 3-D as long as you
have the appropriate audio cable. You would only need to make this
connection if you plan on using the mixer on the sound card to
control CD-Audio. You can purchase an Audio cable for any CD-ROM
drive and your sound card from AMC. The telephone number
for AMC is:

Voice   800 - 882 - 0587

44. What type of CD-ROM adapter is on the end of my card?
The 3-D card boasts an NCR SCSI II host adapter. The SCSI II
host adapter will handle burst rates up to 5MB/sec. It uses an I/O
port address. The default port address is 230h. The optional address
is 330h. The I/O port address is configured at J14 on the sound card.

45. My wavetable card is in the way of me accessing J14. How
can I get around this?
If you have the Wavetable Daughterboard installed then J14 is covered up.
Remove the wavetable card and adjust the jumper accordingly. If you are unable
to remove the wavetable card, you will need to use a pair of needle nose pliers to
move the jumper at J14.
46. Where do I get the drivers for a SCSI CD-ROM drive?
The drivers for a SCSI CD-ROM drive are provided with the
sound card. Use MINI406A.SYS and CDROM.SYS to operate
a SCSI CD-ROM drive.

47. What is MINI406A.SYS?

This driver provides support for a subset of the CAM 3.0 specification.
This driver handles the SCSI I/Os linking the CDROM.SYS driver to the
hardware on the sound card.

The current version of MINI406A.SYS is 3.0

Please be aware that this driver must load before any other SCSI drivers.

The only parameter available for this driver is the I/O port address assignment.

/IO=<port address>
This number must match the SCSI board I/O port value set at J14.
The options for the I/O are 230h (default) and 330h.

48. I am getting the following error message when the
MINI406A.SYS driver loads, "NO BIOS FOUND." How can I
correct this?
Change the I/O address to for the SCSI host adapter on the sound
card. You will need to access J14 on the sound card to do this.

49. I am getting the following error message when the
Mini406A.SYS driver loads, "could not find SDMS." How
can I eliminate this error message?
Change the I/O address to for the SCSI host adapter on the
sound card. You will need to access J14 on the sound card to do this.

50. What is CDROM.SYS?
This driver must follow the MINI406A.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS
file. The /D: device label must match the /D: device label in the
MSCDEX.EXE line located in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

The current version of CDROM.SYS is 3.0.

The only parameter available on the CDROM.SYS line is the /D: parameter.

/D:<label>      device label.

The default device label is:
/D:MVCD001

51. When I connect my SONY SCSI CD ROM drive to the
Premium 3-D SCSI interface, MINI406A.SYS causes my
system to hang.
If you have one of the following Sony drives,

CDU-541
CDU-6211
CDU-561

please make sure that "/LUN=0" is inserted at the end
of the MINI406A.SYS statement.

52. What are all of the available options for MSCDEX.EXE?
The options are as follows:

/D:<label>      device label for CD-ROM

/M:# memory buffers, up to 32 can be used

/L:x            desired drive letter

/V              display information during load

/S              sharable, remote access

/E              locate buffers in EMS

/K              Kanji (Japanese character set)

53. I am getting CDR 101 errors. What can I do to fix this?
Troubleshoot your CD-ROM drive while in DOS. A CDR 101 error is a very difficult error to troubleshoot
via FAQ. Here are all of the possible trouble shooting tips that I can think of that will either eliminate the
problem, or at least narrow it down. The PC is assuming that the driver is loaded properly, but the CD-
ROM drive is having problems reading the disk. Please try the following.

1.) Make sure that you are not trying to read an audio disc.

2.) Check the internal flat ribbon cable. Disconnect and reconnect the ribbon cable that connect the CD-
ROM drive to the sound card. Do this at both ends of the cable. Try a different or new ribbon cable. It is
possible that the cable is bad. If the cable is correctly connected to the card, it is possible that it is plugged
in backwards on the CD-ROM drive. In most cases the drive's connector is "keyed" so the cable cannot be
put on wrong, however, it is possible to force the cable on incorrectly. Check the cable for damage, kinks,
or being stretched to the maximum length. Make sure the ribbon cable is installed with the colored edge up
(toward the 4 pin connector, J4) and is seated completely. When you re-install the cable, check for bent
pins; also, check the cable to make sure that it is not off-set where it is not covering all of the pins.

3.) Make sure there is a LASTDRIVE statement in the CONFIG.SYS and that it is high enough to cover
the CD-ROM drive plus one drive. In other words, if the CD-ROM drive is drive E, then the statement
should read as follows:

	LASTDRIVE=F

This is a requirement of MSCDEX.EXE. You don't need a LASTDRIVE statement if the CD-ROM drive is
drive D.

4.) The CD-ROM driver should ideally be located at the bottom of the CONFIG.SYS file. Very rarely
should it be at the top of the file. If the CD-ROM driver loads first, it's possible to cause other problems.
As a test, move the CD-ROM drivers to the top of the CONFIG.SYS file. Make sure that you are using the
latest version of MSCDEX.EXE on your system. Here is a sample line for your AUTOEXEC.BAT file that
will ensure that you are using the proper version of MSCDEX.EXE for you system.

	C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE  /D:MVCD001  /M:10

If you are using DOS 5.00, the version that MSCDEX.EXE should report is 2.21.
If you are using DOS 6.00, the version that MSCDEX.EXE should report is 2.22.
If you are using DOS 6.20, the version that MSCDEX.EXE should report is 2.23.

If you have run Memmaker and it has put memory locations at the front of the Media Vision lines, please
remove the memory locations.

5.) If your drive uses a caddy, make sure the caddy lid is closed. Make sure the metal door on the caddy
will move smoothly to the left or right, as well as return freely to the center. Try a different caddy. Make
sure the CD is not skewed in the drive bay or the CD caddy. Confirm that the CD is not up-side down. In
the drive bay, you can read the label of the CD when the drive door is open. With a caddy, you can see the
label of the CD through the clear plastic.

Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive; replace it with a different CD, or use a replacement of the
original CD. See if the same error occurs. I there are no more errors, then the first CD was bad. If it
continues with the same problem, then something else is wrong. If you do have a bad CD that was supplied
with your kit, please let me know.

6.) Re-seating..... Pull the card out of the slot it is currently in and put it back in the same slot. Or, pull the
card out of its current slot, and put it back into a different slot.

7.) Adjust the I/O port address for the SCSI host adapter. If you have the I/O set to 230h which is the
default, please change the I/O to 330h. You will need to move jumper J14 to do this.

8.) Reduce your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to the bare minimums. You will only want to
load MVSOUND.SYS and TSLCDR.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS. In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you will
only want to load MSCDEX.EXE.

9.) Change EMM386 to the version that came with Windows 3.1. Here is
a sample line:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM 1024

If these suggestions do not work, the drive needs to be serviced.

54. How do I get CD audio from my third party CD-ROM drive?
You will need to contact a company by the name of AMC. AMC is not
affiliated with Media Vision. AMC will be able to provide you with the
appropriate audio cable necessary to connect any CD-ROM drive to the
Premium 3-D. Here are the telephone numbers for AMC.

Voice   800 - 882 - 0587

55. What are the Audio cable pin-outs on the Premium 3-D?
Here are the pin-outs for the audio connector on the Premium 3-D.
The Premium 3-D card uses the same pin out as the PAS 16.

PIN - 1 = GROUND
PIN - 2 = RIGHT
PIN - 3 = GROUND
PIN - 4 = LEFT
PIN - 5 = GROUND
56. Pocket CD won't work. I am getting the following error
message. "There is an undetectable problem in loading
the specified device driver."
First, make sure that you have a music CD in the drive before and when
you launch PocketCD. If not, you will get this error every time.

If you do have a music CD in the drive, and still get the error, you will
need to:
1) Go to the Control Panel (in Main).
2) Open DRIVERS, and look for [mci] CD Audio. Double-click on this.
3) If you get a "One CD-ROM found" message, restart Windows, and try
PocketCD again. If there is no message, you will need to make sure your
CD-ROM driver is loading in DOS.

4) You may need to delete and then reinstall the [mci] CD Audio driver.
This is a Microsoft driver. Once you have replaced the [mci] CD Audio
driver and if PocketCD is still not working, you need to exit Windows and
shut the system down. Restart your system, and try PocketCD one more
time.

5.) Make sure that you are using the proper version of MSCDEX for your
system. MSCDEX stands for Microsoft CD Extensions. MSCDEX is a
DOS version sensitive program. Here is a sample line for your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file that will ensure that you are using the proper
version of MSCDEX.EXE for your system.

C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE  /D:MVCD001  /M:10

Here is a table to assist in determining the proper version of MSCDEX
for your system:

DOS version             MSCDEX.EXE version
=====================================
5.00                    2.21
6.00                    2.22
6.20                    2.23

Finally, try updating your CD-ROM driver, (if available), since this can also
create an error with PocketCD.

57. I am unable to use the Media Player in Windows to play
audio CDs. How can I correct this problem?
If you do not have an option for CD Audio with Media Player, you
will need to edit the MPLAYER.INI file for Windows. You can use
Notepad to edit the file. All you need to do is make sure that you have the
following line in the [Devices] section.

[Devices]
CDAudio=17,  CD Audio

58. I am only getting sound from one channel when playing a
music CD.
The only driver that affects CD Audio is the [mci] CD Audio driver. This
is a Windows driver. Before we automatically assume that the driver needs
to be replaced, try adjusting the BALANCE on the Mixer.

If you now start hearing stereo sound, then your mixer was out of
adjustment.

If your drive has a headphones jack, try plugging the speakers or a set of
headphones into the headphones jack on the CD-ROM drive. If you still
do not hear stereo, then the drive is malfunctioning.

If you hear stereo out of the headphones jack, then the problem is probably
with the audio cable itself or its connection to the sound card. Double
check all of your connections. If it is SAFE to operate your PC with the
cover off, you might try to GENTLY wiggle the audio cable at each end.
You may just have a bad connection.

If it can be determined that the audio cable is good, then the sound card is
going to be the source of the trouble.

If the Mixer is set properly, then you should reinstall the
[mci] CD Audio driver. You will find this driver in the Drivers Applet
under Control Panel. Once you have replaced the [mci] CD Audio driver
and if the Windows CD player is still not working properly, you will need to
exit Windows and shut the system down. Restart your system, and try the
player one more time.

59. How do I increase the performance of my CD-ROM drive?
Here are some tips on possible ways to increase CD-ROM performance:

1) Increase M-parameter (memory buffers) on MSCDEX.EXE (32 is
max.)
2) Use Expanded memory , and the /E switch on MSCDEX (only on
certain computers.)
3) Try using the CD-ROM caching feature contained in SMARTDRV that
comes with DOS 6.2. CD-ROM caching is a feature of SMARTDRV
that comes with DOS 6.2. To ensure that SMARTDRV is caching
your CD-ROM drive, make sure that you do not have the /U switch on
your SMARTDRV line.

60. What will decrease the performance of my CD-ROM drive?
In general, here are some things that reduce CD-ROM performance:

1) Loading MSCDEX into high memory (most common)
2) Incorrect MSCDEX for your DOS version (common)
3) Using Expanded memory , and the /E switch on MSCDEX (only on
certain computers)
4) Sound card conflicts (DMA, IRQ, or port address)
5) Loading the CD-ROM driver into high memory (uncommon)
6) Using the CD-ROM caching that defaults with SMARTDRV that
comes with MS-DOS 6.2. To disable the caching feature, add the
/U switch on your SMARTDRV line.

61. I am getting "ADLIB is already in use" errors when I try to
run my DOS applications through Windows. How do I get
rid of this error message?
If you are getting this type of an error, you are loading unnecessary drivers
when you load Windows. Check your SYSTEM.INI file for any of the
following drivers. If you find any of these, please remark them out with
semi-colons ( ;; ). These lines will reside in the [386Enh] section of your
SYSTEM.INI file.

DEVICE=VADLIBD.386
DEVICE=PROSD.386
DEVICE=VPROSFM.386
DEVICE=VPASD.386
DEVICE=VSBD.386
DEVICE=VSBPD.386
DEVICE=VSGLX16.386
DEVICE=VSGLD.386
DEVICE=VSGD.386
DEVICE=VSGLX.386

62. My DOS applications will not work properly when run
through Windows.
It is not recommended that you run DOS based multimedia applications
through Windows. Many DOS applications that include sound need to
be run under DOS due to memory requirements. In many instances, this
can be verified with the game or application manufacturer.

63. I am getting the following error message, "Can't find ver.
2.00 of VDMAD.386."
Some Windows applications replace this driver by their own DMA driver.
To correct this problem, you need to edit your SYSTEM.INI file. Look in
the [386Enh] section for the following line:

DEVICE=VDMADX.386

Comment this line out of your file with semi-colons (;;).

;; DEVICE=VDMADX.386

Then, add the following statement to the very beginning of the [386Enh]
section:

DEVICE=*VDMAD

Restart Windows. The error message should disappear.

64. Why is Windows making an annoying looping sound when
Windows first starts?
You are having an IRQ conflict. You should be able to resolve this quite
easily. Please make the following changes to your system files, and you
should be fine.

CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS  A220  D1  I10 H7  M320  Q2  V

AUTOEXEC.BAT

SET BLASTER=A220 I10 D1 H5 T4

Test the DMA and IRQ settings by using TPLAY.EXE under DOS.

Use TPLAY.EXE under DOS to make sure that we are using a solid IRQ
channel. Make sure that your speakers or headphones are plugged into the
OUT jack on the back of the sound card. Please note that you may use
something other than the PCM0811M.WAV file to test your sound. Change
directories to the Media Vision directory (MEDVSN\DIAG). Test the sound by
entering the following line:

C:\MEDVSN\DIAG>TPLAY  PCM0811M.WAV       [enter]

You should hear the .WAV file play once.

If this does not sound normal, adjust the IRQ setting on the
PROS.SYS line in your CONFIG.SYS file. Once you have sound under
DOS, the Windows sound should follow. Make sure that you are using
the same DMA and IRQ settings under DOS and Windows. The DMA
and IRQ settings for Windows can be found in the [MVIWAVE.DRV]
section near the bottom of the SYSTEM.INI file.

65. I am getting an error message stating that I need to "load
Multimedia Extensions" before I run the installation
program. How do get rid of this message?
Before you can successfully install the Window drivers, you need to edit
your SYSTEM.INI (in the Windows directory). Look in the [boot]
section, and locate a line that looks like this:

DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL

If this line is gone, add it. If there is anything else on the end of this
line, put two semi-colons in front of the whole line. Here is an example:

;; DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL POWER.DRV

Add a new line right below the original, and make it look just like the first
sample line above. Save the file; re-boot Windows. Now you can run the
installation. After it has completed, remove the new line, and remove the
semi-colon on the original.

66. Ever since I installed your card, Windows locks up when I
try to exit. What is happening?
When exiting Windows, a .WAV file is trying to play. The sound card is
not able to play the .WAV file, and at this point, the computer is waiting
for the file to be played. It is likely that you are having an IRQ or DMA
conflict. Here are some troubleshooting tips that should help you solve this
problem. Here is a sample line for your CONFIG.SYS file.

CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS  A220  D1  I10  H7  M320  Q2  V

You should first determine that you do not have an IRQ conflict. You will
want to test the IRQ values under DOS. Here is a simple test that will tell
us whether or not we have a solid IRQ setting.

You should hear the .WAV file play once. If you hear no sound,
adjust the thumbwheel on the back of the sound card.

Try the TPLAY command again

If this does not work, try a different DMA / IRQ combination. Once there
is sound in DOS, Windows should also have sound. If you still have no
sound in Windows, then check to make sure that the DMA and IRQ
settings for Windows match the D and I parameters on the PROS.SYS
line. You will find the DMA and IRQ settings near the bottom of your
SYSTEM.INI file for Windows. Here are the changes that should have
been made to your SYSTEM.INI.

SYSTEM.INI

[BOOT]
SOUND.DRV=MMSOUND.DRV
DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL MSMIXMGR.DLL MMIXER.DLL

[386ENH]
DEVICE=VMVID.386
DMABUFFERSIZE=064

[MCI]
CDAUDIO=MCICDA.DRV

[DRIVERS]
WAVE=MVIWAVE.DRV
MIXER=MVI508MX.DRV
MIDI=MVIFM.DRV
MIDI1=MVID401.DRV

[MVIWAVE.DRV]
PORT=220
INT=10
DMACHANNEL=1
DMACHANNEL2=7

[MVI401.DRV]
INT=2
PORT=320

67. I am getting the following error message, "Illegal DMA
Channel Specified."
Make sure the PROS.SYS driver is loaded after HIMEM.SYS
and EMM386.EXE. Also try adding the V switch on the end of
the PROS.SYS line. Here is a sample line:

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS  A220 D1  I7  H7  M320 Q2 V

68. I am getting the following error message, "Cannot acquire
int 2F interface failing load."
This error will occur if a previous PROS.SYS device driver has
been loaded. Look for another PROS.SYS line in CONFIG.SYS.
Remove the additional line.

69. I am getting the following error message, "No interrupts,
stopping playback," when using PLAYFILE.
You will also get this error in PLAYFILE if the SET BLASTER line
in AUTOEXEC.BAT does not reflect the same settings as on the
PROS.SYS line which you will find in your CONFIG.SYS file.

70. Some of my sounds under Windows play fast. It sounds
like my card is one of the Chipmunks. How do I fix this?
You can fix this by adding the following line to the [MVIWAVE.DRV]
driver settings in the SYSTEM.INI file.

Samplemode=Soundblaster

Here is a sample section:

[MVIWAVE.DRV]
PORT=220
INT=10
DMACHANNEL=1
DMACHANNEL2=5
Samplemode=Soundblaster

71. Why do I get a "No Interrupts" error message when I run
PLAYFILE TEST16?
When you receive this error message, you will probably experience one of
the following symptoms.

1. 8-bit test plays 2 times and then the "No Interrupts" message will
be displayed.

2. The wave file will sound distorted. This may be a DMA conflict.

It is necessary to make DMA and/or IRQ adjustments to
correct the problem. Here is an easy way to make the adjustments.

1. To view the 3-D board settings, in the \[Media Vision directory]
directory, type:

PROS V          [enter]

2. Once you see your current settings, you can change the settings
at the DOS prompt. To change the settings, please enter the following:

PROS [A###] [D#] [I#] [H#] [P###] [Q#] [V N ]   [enter]

The options are as follows:

Parameter: A###
Description: ### = Base Port of Sound Card
Default: 220h

Parameter: D#
Description: # = DMA Channel for 8-bit audio
Default: 1

Parameter: I#>
Description: # = IRQ Channel
Default: 7

Parameter: H#
Description: # = DMA Channel for 16-bit audio
Default: 7

Parameter: P###
Description: ### = Base Port of Midi Device
Default: 320h

Parameter: Q#
Description: # = IRQ Channel for Midi
Default: 2

V       verbose, display settings<li>
N don't print sign on banner

3. Then run the SET BLASTER statement again at the
DOS prompt to reflect the changes to PROS AND do another
PLAYFILE TEST. Please note that you MUST run the
SET BLASTER statement. If you do not, the changes will
not be made, and PLAYFILE will continue to produce errors.

Once you determine a solid set of values, change the
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to reflect your new settings.

72. Why is the SRS option missing in Sound Impressions?
Edit the SYSTEM.INI file. Look at the [boot] section.
The drivers= line should read as follows:

drivers=mmsystem.dll msmixmgr.dll mmixer.dll

If making the above adjustment does not solve the problem,
edit the Sound Impressions AUDIO.INI (found in the Windows
subdirectory.) Look for the heading [Audio]. In this section,
there should be the line MIXERTYPE=xxxx where xxxx is some
sound card's mixer. If this line does not exist, please enter the
following line:

	MIXERTYPE=MEDIAVISIONSTD

If line already exists as above, please try changing the line to read as follows:

	MIXERTYPE=MEDIAVISIONPA3D

73. Why are all of my sounds under Windows distorted?
The mixer is extremely touchy under Windows. Make sure that
you have the gain controls set low enough not to cause distortion.
Remember that you also have a thumbwheel on the back of the card
that will allow you to further adjust your volume settings.

74. My Sound Impressions mixer has reverted back to an older
version of Sound Impressions. What happened?
Check your SYSTEM.INI file for a new mixer driver. The only
line that refers to a mixer in the [drivers] section of the SYSTEM.INI
should read as follows:

MIXER=MVI508MX.DRV

75. I am having trouble adjusting my volume. How can I
correct this?
Please check the port address used on the 3D card. In some
situations if the port address is not set to 220, the volume control
will not function correctly.

Make sure you do this for both DOS and Windows.

With Sound Impressions, if a particular mixer channel is not
responding as expected, it may be that the RECORD source is
selected for that channel. Change the RECORD source, and the
problem should be corrected.

76. I know that the Premium 3-D uses a thumbwheel to control
volume; is there a way to control the volume via my
keyboard?
Yes.

You can use CTRL + ALT + U to increase the volume.
You can use CTRL + ALT + D to decrease the volume.
You can also use CTRL + ALT + M to mute and unmute the volume.

Please note that these controls will only work under Windows.

77. My HP scanner no longer functions after I put the Premium
3-D card in my computer.
The SCSI CAM drivers for the HP Scanjet adapter and the Premium 3D
SCSI2 interface are having compatibility problems.

As of this writing, there is no "official" fix from Media Vision
or from HP. The best work around that's been discovered so
far is to retrieve and use an ASPI manager/SCSI driver for the
SCANJET from Compuserve's Hewlett-Packard's Peripherals Forum.

This ASPI manger/SCSI driver does not belong to HP. HP did
not create this driver. An HP customer has created this driver.
HP is not liable for this driver nor is Media Vision liable for this driver.

Please be aware that the work around is simply a suggestion.

The file name in the Compuserve HP Peripherals forum is
ASPIDR.ZIP. As of this writing, Compuserve is the only place
where this driver can be downloaded.

There is an README file that's zipped with the
driver. Please read this file. It will explain how to implement
the new driver.

78. What do I need to do to get my joystick to work?
The joystick port on the 3-D card is automatically enabled.

Here are some tips that should ensure that your joystick port works.

1.) Make sure that you have only 1 active game port on your system.
Some motherboards have a built in game port. You will need to disable the
built in game port to use the game port on the sound card. There is currently
no way to disable the game port on the 3-D card. Future revisions of the
card will allow the enabling and disabling of the game port.

2.) Try turning the TURBO switch off on your PC.

3.) Try putting the card in a different slot.

4.) Make sure that the BUS speed on your system is set to 8 Mhz.

Some Hard drive controllers and motherboards may have a joystick port
built into them.

Remove the sound card and connect the joystick to the Multi I/O card
game port. If it works, the game port is NOT disabled.

Sometimes you will not be able to find the actual port that you would plug
the Joystick into, however the interface may still be there and enabled!
Look on all cards (including the mother board) for 16 pin header
connectors with nothing plugged into them. It is possible that this is a
header connector for a joystick interface.

Finally, you may need to reinstall your game to get the joystick recognized
by the software.

79. What are the pin outs for the Joystick/Midi port?
1       +5VDC
2       JOYSTICK 1 FIRE 1
3       JOYSTICK 1 X
4       GROUND
5       GROUND
6       JOYSTICK 1 Y
7       JOYSTICK 1 FIRE 2

If you have a Midimate, the Midimate joystick port will support dual
joysticks.

81. What is a Midimate?
A Midimate is a device that will allow you to connect a music keyboard to
your sound card. The Midimate connects to the joystick/midi connector
on the sound card and the midi connector on your music keyboard.

82. How is the MPU-401 emulation enabled on the Premium 3-
D?
MPU-401 emulation is enabled automatically when you install the
software for the card. .You assign an I/O address and an IRQ on the
PROS.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file.

Use the M and Q parameters to do change the values for the I/O and IRQ
respectively. Please see question # 35 for more information on the M
and Q parameters.

83. MIDI doesn't work on my system. How do I configure the
Midimapper?
1) Double-click on Control Panel (in the Main group).
2) Double-click on MIDIMAPPER.
3) Click on NEW. A dialog box will come up.
4) Enter "Music1" in the name field.
5) Click on OK. A grid will now come up.
6) In the center column, titled "PORT NAME," click once on [None] to
bring down a list of available MIDI sound sources.
7) Select "MVI OPL3 FM Synthesizer" This selection uses the sound
card to create the MIDI sound for MIDI channel 1.
8) Repeat steps 6 and 7 for MIDI channels 1-10.
9) Click on OK. When prompted to save the changes, click on YES.
10) Click on the CLOSE button located near the right of the screen.

84. What is wavetable synthesis?
Wavetable synthesis uses digital recording samples of real instruments to
play MIDI music.

85. Is my card wavetable upgradeable?

Onboard DSP provides Reverb and Chorus effects.

88. Why can't I hear any FM sounds?
Under DOS, check the MIXER settings, make sure the FM Synth.
gain is not set to 0. Please ensure that the wavetable option is selected
if the wavetable add-on card is present.

Under Windows, check the MIDI Mapper to see if the MIDI channels in
use are set to Voyetra. Check the volume/gain settings in Sound
Impressions. If there is no wavetable add-on card present, make
sure the wavetable option is not selected in the FM driver in the
Control Panel.

89. When Windows starts, an error message is displayed
saying that a different port address is set for the MPU-401
emulation under Windows than is set under DOS.

The Windows driver MVI401.DRV cannot accept as wide a
range of port address values as PROS.SYS. Please ensure that
the port address selected for MPU-401 emulation is within the
range 300-330h.

Port address 320 is the default setting.

90. How do I select the different drum palettes that are
accessible on the wavetable card?
The default drum palette is general midi drums. Here are the
changes that you should make to select a different drum palette.

When in MIDISOFT recording session, when you select
the instrument choose:

Prog Change 0 -16 = GM Sound Set
Prog Change 17 = Power Kit
Prog Change 18 - 25 = GM Sound Set
Prog Change 26 = Analog Kit
Prog Change 27 - 40 = GM Sound Set
Prog Change 41 = Brush Kit
Prog Change 42 - 96 = GM Sound Set
Prog Change 97 = Downloaded Program
Prog Change 98 - 127 = GM Sound Set
This only applies to channel 10 (or whatever channel you
have your DRUMCHANNEL set to)

91. What does the file 3DUPDATE.EXE (aka NCR.EXE) do?
There is no need for you to download 3DUPDATE.EXE if you own the MV2200.
All the updates present in the 3DUPDATE.EXE file are already incorporated in
your installation software. Just for information purposes, here are the changes that
3DUPDATE.EXE incorporated.

1. The Windows audio drivers fix a fast play-back (chipmunks)
problem on some digitally sampled audio files or applications.

2. The latest NCR SCSI CD ROM drivers fix a lock-up, when
you are using 386Max as a memory manager.

3. Also included in the file is the VESA BIOS Extension/Audio
Interface driver (VBEAI.COM) for the Premium 3-D.

92. I have a Compaq Presario. I am having difficulties finding
a solid set of DMA and IRQ values. Please help.
If your computer has an internal sound system, you will
need to disable the internal sound system address, IRQ, and
DMA. You can do this by pressing F10 during POST.

Use the following line in place of your current PROS.SYS line.

DEVICE=C:\MEDVSN\PROS.SYS A220 D1 I5 H1 M320 Q2

Please make sure the SET BLASTER line values match the
same values set on the PROS.SYS line.

In this instance, the SET BLASTER line would read:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H1 T4

93. I am having troubles using the Premium 3D with the Reel
Magic MPEG player from Sigma Designs.
To make both cards co-exist peacefully in the same computer,
use the following information as a guideline.

1) Make sure the Media Vision sound card is installed and
working correctly under both DOS and Windows.

2) Make sure the Reel Magic board is installed according to
its installation instructions. In addition, connect, via a short
1/8" mini stereo cable, the MPEG output to the line-in on the
sound card. This allows the sound card to control volume.

3) To setup the Reel Magic card to work with an existing sound
card, perform the following steps:

- Change directories to the Reel Magic directory and run SETUP.
- The displayed Setup screen to switch options ON and OFF.
- Use the mouse to switch the Sound Card Emulation option to OFF.
- Change the MPEG IRQ to 15
- Save the new settings.
- Reboot the computer for the changes to go into effect.

Listed below is a list of the sound card and the Reel Magic settings
that may work for you.

Reel Magic I/O Ports:   260-263
MPEG Playback IRQ:      15
